Website maintenance and support services

A website is more like a car than a brochure. Left alone it still looks fine for a while, until the day it doesn’t start. Maintenance is what stops that day from arriving.

Software you depend on gets vulnerabilities found in it all the time. Frameworks and CMSs stop supporting old versions, payment providers change their APIs and browsers change their behaviour. The risk builds slowly and invisibly, and then it turns into an emergency at the worst possible moment.

The value of a maintenance plan lies in the unglamorous details. Updates are tested on a staging copy before reaching the live site. Backups are stored off-server, and we actually test restoring them, because a backup nobody has ever restored is just a hope. Monitoring tells us something is wrong before your customers do.

Sites we didn’t build

We’re happy to take on sites from other suppliers. We begin with a review to establish what’s there, get the access details and hosting into your name where possible, and tell you about anything that needs attention. If you’re maintaining an app rather than a website, see mobile app maintenance.

What goes wrong without it

Breaches through old software

Out-of-date CMS plugins and framework versions are among the most common ways sites get compromised.

Backups that don’t work

They’re stored on the same server, or they’ve been silently failing for months, and it’s only discovered when one is needed.

Slow decline

Forms stop sending, links rot, the site gets heavier, and enquiries fade away without anyone noticing.

What a plan covers

Security updates

Regular updates to the CMS, framework and dependencies, tested on staging first.

Backups

Automated, off-site backups with periodic restore tests.

Monitoring

Uptime, SSL expiry and error tracking, with alerts going to a person who can act on them.

Form and journey checks

Routine tests that enquiry forms and key journeys still work.

Small changes

An agreed allowance for content edits, fixes and improvements.

Reporting

A short, readable summary of what was done and what’s coming up.

Website Maintenance questions

How much does website maintenance cost?
It depends on the platform and how much is covered: a small brochure site needs far less than a platform with integrations. We’d confirm a scope once we’ve looked at the site.
Do you maintain sites you didn’t build?
Yes, after a review so we understand what we’re taking on.
Can’t our host do this?
Hosts generally look after the server, and sometimes back it up. They normally don’t test application updates, check your forms or fix code, so check exactly what your plan includes.
