Web Development

Frontend development services

The interface is the product, as far as your users are concerned. We build front ends that respond quickly, work with a keyboard and don’t collapse under their own weight after a year.

Modern JavaScript makes it easy to ship far more code than a page needs. A heavy bundle may feel fine on a developer’s laptop, then crawl on a mid-range phone on a train. Interaction to Next Paint, one of Google’s Core Web Vitals, measures exactly this sort of sluggishness, and most users simply experience it as a site that feels broken.

We start by working out how much JavaScript a screen needs. Plenty of pages are better rendered on the server with small interactive parts added on top. Complex tools such as dashboards, editors and multi-step forms deserve a proper component architecture, typed with TypeScript and backed by tests. Picking the right approach for each part of a product saves more money than any later optimisation.

Accessibility isn’t a final-week task

Keyboard support, focus management and screen-reader labelling are much easier to build in than to retrofit, and custom components such as menus and dialogs are where accessibility most often goes wrong. We use WCAG 2.2 AA as our working target. For public-sector clients in the UK this can be a legal requirement, and for everybody else it’s a larger audience.

Common frontend problems

Sluggish interfaces

Too much JavaScript on load, unnecessary re-renders and third-party scripts blocking the main thread.

An inconsistent UI

Six kinds of button, no shared components, and every new feature reinventing the last.

An ageing framework

AngularJS, jQuery or an old React setup that nobody wants to work on and is getting harder to hire for.

Frontend services

Interface builds

Responsive, accessible screens built with React, Vue or server-rendered templates.

Component libraries

Reusable, documented components that keep your product consistent. See also our design systems work.

Performance work

Bundle analysis, code splitting, image delivery and Core Web Vitals fixes.

Accessibility reviews

Audits against WCAG 2.2 AA with practical fixes, tested with a keyboard and a screen reader.

Framework migrations

Moving legacy front ends a screen at a time while the product keeps running.

Frontend questions

React or Vue?
Both are excellent. React has the larger hiring pool in the UK and a bigger ecosystem, while Vue is often quicker to get started with and pairs well with Laravel. We’d choose based on your team and what you already have.
Do you do design as well?
Yes, through our UI/UX design team. We’re also happy to build from designs your own team has produced.
Can you improve our Core Web Vitals without a rebuild?
Usually. Many gains come from images, fonts and third-party scripts rather than the framework. We measure first and start with what will move the numbers most.
