Fintech software development for UK companies

Financial software has very little room for error. Money has to add up exactly, every action needs an audit trail, and regulators expect you to be able to show how things work.

The first question for most fintech founders is regulatory: do you need to be authorised, or can you work under a partner? Many start by building on regulated banking-as-a-service or payments providers, which can be quicker, at the price of depending on them. Do take specialist legal advice here, as the answer shapes your product, your partners and your timeline.

From a technical point of view, financial systems need some different habits. Money should never be stored as a floating-point number. A ledger should be append-only, so that you correct errors with new entries rather than rewriting history. Operations need to be idempotent, because a network retry mustn’t move money twice. And you’ll want to be able to reconstruct precisely what happened to any transaction, and why, years later.

Consumer Duty and product design

The FCA’s Consumer Duty requires firms to deliver good outcomes for retail customers, and this reaches into design. Confusing journeys, dark patterns that push people towards unsuitable choices, and cancellation that’s harder than sign-up can all become regulatory issues. Monitoring outcomes, including for vulnerable customers, means building the right data capture into the product. Design and compliance belong in the same conversation.

Regulation to design around

FCA authorisation

Payments, e-money, lending and investments are generally regulated activities. Establish your position, or your partner’s, before building.

Consumer Duty

Requires good outcomes for retail customers, and evidence of them, which affects product flows, communications and data.

Strong Customer Authentication

Most electronic payments and sensitive account access require two-factor authentication under UK rules, with certain exemptions.

Open Banking

Regulated access to account data and payment initiation through bank APIs, usually reached through an authorised provider such as an aggregator.

PCI DSS

Applies wherever card data is handled. Using a provider’s hosted fields keeps most of the burden away from your systems.

Anti-money laundering

The Money Laundering Regulations require customer due diligence, and suitable identity checks and monitoring need designing in.

What we can build

Double-entry systems with full audit trails and automated reconciliation.

Open Banking integrations

Account data and pay-by-bank through providers such as TrueLayer or Plaid.

Compliance tooling

KYC workflows, transaction monitoring queues and regulatory reporting.

Fintech questions

Do we need FCA authorisation?
It depends on what your product does and who you partner with. That’s a question for a specialist lawyer or compliance consultant, and it’s best answered before you begin building.
Can you help us pass security reviews from banks and partners?
We can build to the standards they expect and supply technical evidence, and we’d arrange independent penetration testing through a suitable specialist.
Should we build our own ledger?
Often not at first. Providers and specialist ledger products can save a lot of time. Building your own tends to make sense if it’s central to your product, or if you’ve outgrown what’s available.
