Custom eCommerce development
Most retailers shouldn’t build custom eCommerce. It’s for business models that standard platforms can’t support, or where the buying experience itself is your competitive edge.
Building your own commerce platform means owning checkout, tax, payments, security and everything else that Shopify would handle for you. So the case needs to be strong. It usually rests on something structural: you’re running a multi-vendor marketplace, your products need configuring with complicated rules, your pricing depends on live data or negotiated terms, or commerce is one small part of a larger bespoke system.
There’s a useful middle ground. Commerce engines such as Medusa, along with headless options on established platforms, give you tested carts and order management while you control the experience. You don’t need to write your own tax logic to have a bespoke store, and we’d look carefully at what can be bought before building anything.
Payments and compliance
Keep card data away from your servers. Providers such as Stripe offer hosted fields that reduce your PCI DSS scope significantly, and they manage Strong Customer Authentication. Marketplaces need particular care, as Stripe Connect and similar services help with paying out to sellers, while the rules on identity checks and on VAT for online marketplaces deserve proper advice.
