Custom Software

ERP software development

ERP projects have a reputation, and they earned it. We prefer to reduce the risk: start with the part of your operation causing the most pain, and connect it to what already works.

An ERP joins up purchasing, stock, production, sales and finance so that everyone works from the same data. Full ERP replacements have a well-known record of running over time and budget, and several high-profile UK failures have made the news. Part of the reason is that an ERP touches everything at once, so problems anywhere can stop the whole business.

So we’d question whether you need one system to do it all. Often a better answer is to keep your accounting package (Xero, Sage or similar, since finance is a solved problem and you shouldn’t rebuild it), and then build or buy specialist modules for the parts that make your operation different. These are then connected through reliable integrations. It’s easier to change, cheaper to run and far less risky to roll out.

When a custom ERP does make sense

If you have an unusual production process, complex pricing or configuration rules, or a workflow that packaged ERPs can only reach through expensive customisation, then a custom core may well be worth it. It should be delivered one module at a time, with each one live and useful before the next begins.

Why companies start looking

An old ERP nobody can change

It’s heavily customised, out of support, and upgrades are effectively impossible.

Stock and finance that don’t agree

Different numbers in different systems, and month-end becomes a manual reconciliation.

A packaged ERP that doesn’t fit

You pay for customisation to bend the software, and pay again each time it’s upgraded.

ERP services

Process mapping

Documenting how work and data actually flow before any software decision.

Custom modules

Stock, production planning, purchasing, or quoting built around your operation.

Accounting integration

Connecting to Xero, Sage or Dynamics, so finance stays in the right tool.

Staged migration

Moving data and departments one at a time, with old and new running in parallel where needed.

Reporting

A single reliable view of stock, orders and margin across the business.

Where it fits

ERP Development questions

Should we build or buy an ERP?
Most businesses should buy for finance and standard processes, and consider custom software only for what truly differentiates them. Combining the two is often the most sensible choice.
How do you reduce the risk of an ERP project?
By delivering one module at a time, running old and new in parallel where needed, doing trial data migrations early and keeping the scope tightly controlled.
Can you integrate with our accounting software?
Yes. Xero, Sage and Dynamics all offer APIs. The right design depends on your version and on what needs to sync.
